The Oresund link, the historic viaduct, bridge and tunnel connection between Denmark and Sweden, was scheduled for a royal opening as T&TI went to press.

Queen Magrethe of Denmark and King Carl Gustaff were to lead the three-hour ceremony on July 1 at Lernacken in Sweden. Trains carrying the royal figures and the nations’ prime ministers to the rail link opening will leave Malmo and Copenhagen at the same time.

The 16km link, which connects the two countries for the first time since the Ice Age, will open to road traffic at 11pm on the same day.

The link was built on schedule and within budget, including the $500m immersed tube tunnel.
