DMJM+Harris in joint venture with Arup has been selected by the New York City Transit Authority to begin negotiations for the design of the new 13km long Second Avenue Subway project in New York. The scheme that could cost up to a staggering $30bn will run from Harlem in the north of Manhattan to the area’s southern tip and will be the first major underground transit line built in New York for over 50 years.

Although notice to proceed has yet to be given, the formal appointment was expected as T&TI went to press following approval by the MTA board.

The JV has been working for over two years to secure the contract. A project team will now take up residence in a single office in New York to oversee the design work on the line that will also include 15 underground stations.

The tunnelling section was described by DMJM president John Dionisio as, "straightforward", although the positioning of the stations may present more of a challenge to maximise ease of interaction with the community.

Construction is planned to start in late 2004 and could take up to 10 years.
