London tunnel fit-out contract awarded

9 April 2013

A tunnel fit-out job for the new rail tunnels under London has been awarded to a JV comprising Costain, French trackwork specialist TSO and Alstom Transport, Crossrail announced last week. The job to design and install track and tunnel equipment is the last major construction contract to be awarded.

The joint venture beat rival shortlisted bidders Balfour Beatty Rail and a BAM Nuttal/Ferrovial Agroman/Kier Construction joint venture.
The deal adds to a strings of contract wins for Costain on Crossrail including tunnel portals, ventilation shafts and Bond Street and Paddington stations, Crossrail stated.

Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail chief executive, said: ³Tunnel fit-out is one of the largest contracts to be let by Crossrail and will create hundreds of new job opportunities as well as providing a welcome boost to regionally-based manufacturers and suppliers.²

Costain will be required to create around 50 new apprenticeships and new job start roles for Londoners who are long-term unemployed or out of education or training for six months or more during the life of their contract.
