A 3km road tunnel could be built on the western side of Lantau Island as part of a 30km link across the Pearl River estuary in southern China that would connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai. This follows the appointment of Ove Arup & Partners to carry out preliminary design of the 12km Hong Kong section of the Pearl River link. Arup won the assignment from Hong Kong’s Highways Department. The cross-border link has been proposed as a bridge, but a tunnel option has been put forward to avoid affecting operations at HK Airport.
