Construction of Singapore’s Kallang/Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel was disrupted in mid-October after two cylinders containing acetylene exploded. Seven workers were evacuated, though fortunately no injuries have been reported.

The cylinders were among six that toppled over after being hit by a 12m long steel strut that was being hoisted by crane from the floor of the tunnel, 17m below the junction of Paya Lebar and Airport roads. The main contractor on the 2.96km stretch of tunnel is South Korea’s Samsung Corporation (Engineering & Construction Group), while the struts were being removed by sub-contractor, Soon Li Heng Civil Engineering.
