Five tunnellers were killed and two injured on January 31 after a tunnel collapsed in Shenzhen, southern China, close to the boundary with Hong Kong.

A Shenzhen security committee spokesman said that the cave-in occurred about 50m from the entrance to a 3.7km tunnel that is being built for a water supply scheme on the eastern side of the city.

The men were buried by about 30 cu m of rock and debris, which killed the five instantly.

The incident happened a day after a similar cave-in in the city, although nobody was hurt in that event. Shenzhen city officials are investigating the cause of both incidents.
