Mid-May saw the award by client Satti of the contract for preliminary and final design, environmental impact study and work supervision of the Phase 2 extension of Line 1 of the Turin Metro. The winning JV on the project comprises Systra of France and Italian firms Geodata, Metropolitana Milanese and Studio Quaranta.

The $154M extension runs from the main railway station at Porta Nuova towards the Lingotto Exhibition Centre. The line includes a 4.5km long single tube twin track tunnel with a 6.8m i.d. Of the seven stations, four are to be constructed by cut and cover with the other three mined. The tunnel will be bored constantly under the water table by one or two TBMs through alluvial deposits of gravel and sand locally cemented and with boulders.

Completion of the design is expected at the end of 2001 with construction scheduled for an April 2002 start.

Systra and Geodata already have the contract for the design work supervision of the $320M Phase 1 of Line 1 from Collegno-Porta Nuova Lots 2-3-4, which is currently under construction. The completed Line 1 is scheduled to be open in November 2005 to ensure the system is up and running for the Winter Olympics in 2006 (T&TI April 2001).
