Collapse on No10 subway project in Beijing

1 December 2005

On 30 November, a water leak from a sewer led to a collapse that saw a 400m2 area sink by 10m at a station construction site along the No.10 subway line in Beijing according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.

No casualties were reported although the accident cut-off water and gas supplies in the area around the station, which is located at the Asian Games Village in the northern part of Beijing.

The affected area sank 10m at 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, but recovery efforts began immediately and by 6 a.m. on Thursday, no new cave-in had been reported.

The 25km long No. 10 line runs east to west from Chaoyang District to Haidian District. It is expected to be finished before 2008, when Beijing will host the Olympic Games.
