Balfour Beatty Gammon in Hong Kong tunnel win

3 June 2020

Gammon Construction, Balfour Beatty’s 50:50 joint venture, has been awarded a HKD7.2bn (USD929m) contract to deliver tunnels and other associated works for an automatic people mover (APM) and baggage handling system (BHS) at Hong Kong International Airport.

As part of the deal for owner Airport Authority Hong Kong, Gammon will deliver two 1,800m-long, eight-cell tunnel structures for the APM and BHS systems, as well as all tunnel electrical and mechanical works. The firm will also construct several support buildings, including pumping stations, a data centre and security facilities.

To enhance safety and efficiency, modular solutions will be adopted for 75% of the electrical and mechanical works for the tunnels. Balfour Beatty says that in line with its commitment to reduce onsite activity by 25% by 2025, some work will be carried out off-site to facilitate health and safety, increased productivity and shorten construction time.

The APM and BHS tunnels and the associated works form a major part of the Three Runway System (3RS) project at the airport, allowing travellers to move between the new third runway concourse and the expanded Terminal 2. Around 1,500 workers will be employed on the project at the height of construction.
