3RPORT starts shaft drilling

29 September 2017

US - Contractor S.A. Healy Company (a subsidiary of Lane Construction)/Salini Impregilo began drilling on 28 September for the launch shaft on the Three Rivers Protection and Overflow Reduction Tunnel (3RPORT) in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The 24,500ft (7,468m), 16ft (5m) finished diameter tunnel will be located approximately 200ft (61m) below the ground surface, and lined with precast concrete segments.

Other works includes seven drop shafts and four vent shafts, one pump station shaft, and one retrieval shaft, as well as 1,760ft (536.5m) of connection tunnel adits from drop shafts to the main tunnel in rock.

Lane said it estimates the launch shaft will be completed next spring, and TBM delivery and assembly is expected in summer 2018.

The City of Fort Wayne awarded a USD 188M design-bid-build contract to Salini Impregilo and Lane Construction Corporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary S.A. Healy Company. The project will collect and convey CSO from eight locations along the St. Mary and Maumee Rivers. Once completed, the CSO tunnel system will reduce 90 per cent of combined sewage overflows into the rivers, which occur during large rainstorms.
